Recently, an analysis by the World Health Organization's cancer agency found that in 2022, 515 men and 590 women in the UK developed adenocarcinoma due to exposure to toxic air. It is reported that adenocarcinoma is the most common type of the four subtypes of lung cancer.
Lung cancer ranks first in the global cancer incidence and mortality. In 2022, about 2.5 million people will be diagnosed with lung cancer. IARC found that there are four main subtypes of lung cancer - adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, small cell carcinoma and large cell carcinoma. According to the IARC study published in the journal The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, about 200,000 cases of adenocarcinoma in 2022 were related to air pollution.
Sarah Slater, CEO of Asthma+Lung UK, said that the IARC data fully proves that air pollution has a devastating impact on people's health. "However, the government has not taken decisive action, and even recently approved plans to build an additional runway at Heathrow Airport. This will undoubtedly increase air pollution."
